Roderick Hunter, 30, pled guilty to neglecting baby Ruaridh while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, leaving him unattended for over six hours and failing to provide for his safety and emotional wellbeing on November 23, 2011.
Hunter, now of Nichollfield, Edinburgh, had a drink problem at the time and had also smoked cannabis. Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard Ruaridh woke up at around 3am and Hunter took him into the living room, which they were in the middle of decorating, to feed him.
He then went to the bathroom and left the baby.
Fiscal Depute Karon Rollo said the baby's mother woke at 10am and found the baby lying on the settee with plastic sheeting which was being used to protect the furniture over his face. She attempted to resuscitate the baby while Hunter called the emergency services. Hunter told police he had no memory of Ruaridh being on the sofa.
Sentencing Hunter, Sheriff McColl told him: "I accept you are truly remorseful."
