A mother unwittingly exposed her DJ son as a paedophile after handing his old computer equipment in to a recycling centre.

Garry Traill's mother had no idea he had been using the computer to download nearly 2,000 images of child pornography while living at home.

When he moved out she decided to clear out the unwanted computer and handed it into the Friarton Recycling Centre in Perth - where the images were discovered.

Traill's new home was then raided and he was found to have another laptop with images and a child porn video clip on it, Perth Sheriff Court heard.

Fiscal depute Sue Ruta said Traill had been living at home between 2009 and 2011 and had then moved out. He left behind his computer and his mother eventually recycled it.

"Whilst it was being reconditioned it was noted there were numerous indecent images of what were believed to be young girls," the prosecutor said. "Believing they were under the age of 16, police were contacted."

Traill, 29, Kennels Cottages, Old Scone, admitted having indecent images of children at his family home between 23 October 2009 and 5 March 2011. He also admitted having child porn at another address in Perth between 1 December 2012 and 3 January 2013.

The court was told that Traill was found with almost 2,000 images and they showed children aged as young as nine.

Traill, who now works on Skye as a stonemason, was ordered to carry out 250 hours unpaid work as part of a Community Payback Order. He was placed on probation and the Sex Offenders Register for three years and ordered to attend the Tay Project.
