The 37-year-old woman allegedly walked into the grounds of Craigbarn Primary School in Dundee on Tuesday and hit one of the pupils.
Police were called at 8.50am that morning over the incident and a woman was subsequently charged by police.
A spokesman for Police Scotland's Tayside Division said the child had not required any medical treatment.
He added that a report would be submitted to the procurator-fiscal.
Stewart Hunter, Dundee City Council's education convenor, said: "We would always take children's safety at school very seriously."
