Residents warned to be vigilant as metal thefts rise

HOUSEHOLDERS have been warned about a spate of metal thefts in which copper and lead has been plundered from homes, garages and garden sheds.

Police said thieves were cashing in on the soaring cost of metal and taking advantage of an increasingly lucrative black market driven by the recession. Everything from garden fences, gates, pipes, lead roofing, to even radiators have been targeted.
