Sailor's killer gets 15-year sentence

A man who killed a Scottish sailor in the Philippines in September 2010 has been jailed for up to 15 years.

John MacDonald, 27, was stabbed to death by Anselmo Lacostales after a row in the town of Angono.

Mr MacDonald, of Aberdeen, had travelled to the Philippines to help a woman after she claimed to be pregnant with his child.

Witnesses claim Lacostales was introduced as Nanqueen Romero's brother, but was actually the father of her children.It's claimed the merchant seaman was attacked when Ms Romero broke the news to Lacostales she wanted to marry Mr MacDonald.He was stabbed, then left to die in her apartment after trying to protect her from being assaulted.Lacostales, 29, was later traced and accused of murdering Mr MacDonald, but pled guilty to a reduced charge of homicide at a court in Manila earlier this year.Mr MacDonald's family, who live in Fraserburgh, have been battling for two years to see their son's killer convicted.Yesterday his mother, Joanne MacDonald, said: "I feel no joy now that this has happened. I am just glad it is all over."
