A Scot has been detained on marijuana charges in Mexico.

The man, named as Robb Aspinwall in local media, was held in Puebla, after cannabis was found in a pick-up in which he was travelling.

The 42-year-old was not carrying any of the drug on his person, a Puebla online newspaper said.

But an unspecified quantity of marijuana was discovered under the driver seat of claret Gran Cherokee.

The pick-up had local number plates.

Mr Aspinwall - his name was spelled Aspynwall in the news report - was in the company of a 25-year-old woman called Hurí Gutiérrez Aguilar, who was said to be originally from the Caribbean port of Veracruz.

The pair were searched by municipal police after an anonymous tip-off, according to Mexican news site Periódico Digital.

Puebla, to the south-east of Mexico City, is not one of the cities worst affected by Mexico's drug wars.

Much of Mexico's cannabis production now aimed at local consumption after legalisation in several American states reduces US demand for smuggled drugs.
