A SERIAL shoplifter who leads a gang of thieves who target upmarket stores all over the UK has been ordered to pay £24,228 under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Annette Daniel, 51, is to be stripped of her loot after a sheriff ruled she was the legal owner of a house in Ruchill, Glasgow, which will now be sold to raise the money.

She was given six months to pay.

Daniel, of Robroyston, Glasgow, the sister of scrapyard boss Jamie Daniel, has a string of previous convictions for shoplifting and is serving a 15-month sentence for theft.

At Stirling Sheriff Court, Daniel accepted she had led "a criminal lifestyle" and had made £24,228 from her illegal activities. But she tried to argue she was almost broke - with just £645 in the bank - and could not pay up.

She insisted she did not own the house, in Curzon Street, which she bought in 1995 under the name Annette Martin, using the surname of her partner and the father of her child, Arthur Martin.
