When police raided Connor Ward's Aberdeenshire home in May they found an array of deadly chemicals together with recipes for making explosive devices. Neighbours had to be moved from their homes while Ward's flat in Water Lane, Banff, was thoroughly searched by bomb disposal experts.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Ward's father, Alexander – a registered sex offender – had fathered a child by his son's young ex-girlfriend.
"It is clear that you harbour a deep hatred for your father as you told police it was your intention to kill him and kill yourself by means of a bomb," judge Lord Uist told Ward, 20.
The judge said he was taking into account Ward's lack of criminal record, personality disorder and age. He demanded Ward co-operate with any psychiatric treatment.
