Tributes paid to young mother after death fall

FLOWERS have been left outside a block of flats where a 24-year-old mother fell 200ft to her death.

Ashley Hardie was killed after falling from a 19th-floor kitchen window in a tower block in Prospecthill Circus, Toryglen, Glasgow, on Tuesday.

Miss Hardie was leaning out when it is understood a window swung back and hit her as she shouted to her boyfriend, who was standing outside the block.

Her family have been left devastated and bouquets of flowers were tied to railings at the scene in memory of the young mother. Friends also wrote on her Facebook site. Miss Hardie is understood to have been studying beauty therapy at college and also worked in a cafe. The windows in the tower block are fitted with safety catches, but they can be disabled by residents.A spokeswoman for Glasgow Housing Association, which runs the flats, said they treat the health and safety of their tenants very seriously.She said: “Safety catches were fitted as standard on the block. They are checked as part of our regular maintenance programme and every time a new tenant moves in.”The tragedy happened at 5.45pm on Tuesday and the next day there was another death at the same block of flats. On that occasion, a 39-year-old man died following a fall from the ninth floor of the property.Police said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding Ms Hardie’s death and a report will be sent to the procurator-fiscal.It is the latest in a series of tragedies in the Toryglen area. In January, Hazel Fitzsimons died after falling from the balcony of her flat shortly after she discovered that her five-month-old daughter was a victim of cot death syndrome. Less than a week later Tracey Barnes, 24, died after plunging from a tower block in nearby Prospecthill Road. She was said not to have recovered from the death of her two-year-old son Robbie two years before. Ms Barnes’s death was treated as an accident.
