Police are appealing for information after a taxi driver was stabbed in a “brutal and horrendous” attack in Glasgow in the early hours of this morning.

Officers received a report of a 30-year-old male having been wounded during an altercation in Altyre Street at 2am.

The man had previously picked up two men and a woman in Hamilton Road, Cambuslang, to take them to the address.

When they arrived in Altyre Street, the man sitting in the passenger seat produced a knife and demanded money.

Concerned for his safety, the taxi driver got out of the car, at which point a group of men and women appeared from a property in Altyre Street.

The group surrounded the man and began assaulting him before making their way back inside the property.

Officers said the victim got back into his taxi and drove a short distance away where he stopped and called an ambulance.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and he was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment to a stab wound.

Medical staff have described his condition as “stable.”

Detective Inspector Tom McKean said: “Why a group of people would target an innocent man in this brutal fashion is beyond me and we are currently working to establish the motive for this horrendous incident.

“This type of behaviour is disgraceful and simply will not be tolerated and our officers will do everything they can to find the people responsible for this despicable crime.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in Altyre Street or the surrounding area in the early hours of this morning, who may have witnessed a disturbance or saw anything suspicious, to get in touch.”

The first male passenger in the taxi is described as short, in his late 20s, of medium build, and spoke with a Glasgow accent.

The second male passenger spoke with a Glasgow accent.

The woman passenger is described as around 5ft 4, and of slim build.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Shettleston CID via 101.
