ROADS surrounding four schools in Perth and Kinross will be closed to traffic during drop off and pick up times if councillors approve the latest local authority scheme to cut congestion around schools.
Burrelton Primary School, Coupar Angus Primary School, Arngask Primary School and Luncarty Primary School have been selected for a potential 18-month pilot study to test the effectiveness of school exclusion zones in their area.
Members of Perth and Kinross council's Enterprise & Infrastructure Committee will be asked to approve a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to bring the pilot into effect.
The school exclusion zone will close the road for around 30-45 minutes in the morning and afternoon to coincide with the school drop off and pick up times.
Exemptions will be given to residents, local businesses, Blue Badge holders and other permitted vehicles such as emergency services, school buses and utility companies undertaking emergency repairs.
Traffic bans are already being trialled in a number of other local authority areas, including outside six Edinburgh primary schools, with positive results.
Councillor John Kellas, Convener of the Enterprise & Infrastructure Committee, said: "Effective school restriction zones can help encourage active lifestyles, increase walking and cycling journeys, lead to fewer car trips, and improve road safety outside schools during peak periods.
"We acknowledge that this will require a change in routine for some pupils and parents. However, having seen the success other councils have had, we are confident that this will be a great step forward for improving safety at our schools."
