SCOTLAND'S oldest university has been ranked fifth in the UK in a new league table.

St Andrews University, in Fife, is the only Scottish university in the top ten in the latest edition of the Complete University Guide.

Two other Scottish institutions appear in the top 30 of the 2017 guide with Edinburgh in 19th place and Glasgow at 29th.

In listings covering 70 subjects, St Andrews appears in the top ten for 22 of the 25 subjects it offers and came first for business and management studies.

Professor Garry Taylor, acting principal, said: "The fact St Andrews has retained its fifth place in the UK and top in Scotland is testament to the commitment of university staff who work tirelessly to ensure the unique student experience here is not only maintained, but enhanced.

The Complete University Guide 2017 assesses university performance based on ten measures including student satisfaction, research quality and intensity, entry standards, student and staff ratios and spending on academic services and student facilities. It also assesses the level of Honours degrees achieved and graduate prospects and completion rates.
