NEW religious requirements for pupils have been approved by the council running the country’s most successful schools.

East Renfrewshire Council’s education committee has agreed to prioritise baptised Catholics as entrants into Roman Catholic schools such as St Ninians in Giffnock. The council will require parents to provide a baptismal certificate.

The area’s denominational schools are becoming oversubscribed due to their exceptional exam success rate.

From next month, children not baptised as Catholics will be offered a place in their local non-denominational school if their chosen Catholic school has too many pupils.

Education convener Elaine Green said: “We have set exceptionally high standards within our schools and are always looking at ways to ensure we continue to deliver the best for our pupils.

“I believe these changes to admission arrangements will allow us to continue to effectively and fairly manage the demand for places in our schools.

“We listened carefully to all of the feedback received and as a result have amended our initial plans in order to address concerns.

She said higher priority will be given to children who already have siblings in a particular school for the next two years.
