A SCOTTISH university is bidding to win television show University Challenge for the second time.

Dundee University said it hoped to win the trophy to commemorate its 50th anniversary.

Dundee first won University Challenge in 1983 after beating Durham University.

The only other Scottish university to win the programme was St Andrews University in 1982.

The BBC show, where a panel of students are asked questions by presenter Jeremy Paxman, is usually dominated by teams from Oxford or Cambridge.

Oxford has won it 16 times since 1963 while Cambridge has claimed ten titles.

Dundee were runners up in the competition in 1978 while second spot had also gone to Edinburgh University in 1981 and St Andrews in 1984.

University principal Sir Pete Downes said: “We have been hailed for our excellent teaching quality and student experience.”
