Call for debate on university funding

ACADEMICS have called for a debate on the likely impact of independence on the funding of Scottish universities.

UCU Scotland, which represents lecturers, made the call after warnings that funding from UK-wide research bodies could dry up in an independent Scotland.

Lord Winston, a scientific adviser to the Scottish Government, has said Scottish higher education could "lose income" from bodies such as the Medical Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
