Call for primary teachers to have extra language lessons

Modern-language ­lessons should be compulsory for trainee primary teachers because current school ­provision in Scotland is inadequate, it was claimed yesterday.

A group of 13 local authorities, set up to look at how EU policy affects ­council provision, said specialist teaching was crucial to ensure Scotland was able to compete in the global economy.
