ALONG with many councils across Scotland, pupils in Glasgow will be celebrating record results today.

Figures from Glasgow City Council show that, by the end of S5, the proportion of young people gaining five or more Highers has risen by 1.2% to 8.7%.

Gordon Matheson, the council leader, said: "Glasgow's exam success is at an all-time high with more young people than ever before gaining awards at all levels of Standard Grade, Higher and Advanced Higher."

Other councils showing improvement in attainment included East Renfrewshire, traditionally the best performing in Scotland for exam results, which recorded its best-ever Higher results.

Inverclyde Council also said the number of young people leaving school after 6th year with more than five Highers had reached a record high of more than 26%.
