STRIKE action is to continue at a Scottish college despite negotiations to resolve the dispute.

The EIS teaching union, which has accused Ayrshire College of trying to make changes to terms and conditions without consultation, said the dispute would continue until a resolution could be found.

Larry Flanagan, general secretary of the EIS, said: "While some progress was made during recent discussions, the programme of industrial action has now been reinstated due to a failure to agree a negotiated agreement with Ayrshire College management.

"A new negotiating meeting is scheduled for the end of the week where further discussions will be held to attempt to reach agreement.

"It is regrettable that the strike action had to be reinstated, but the intransigence of the college's position on certain issues, coupled with the absence of members of senior college management from recent key negotiating meetings, made it impossible to reach agreement despite our best efforts."

A college spokesman said: "It is very disappointing that a small group of lecturers has chosen to continue strike action which may impact negatively on some students' learning experience. All campuses will be open as normal this week and the college will work hard to limit the impact of the strike on students."
