PUPILS are being hit by financial cuts to education services, a leading body has warned.

And the Association of Directors of Education Scotland (Ades) said the experiences of pupils in different parts of the country was too varied.

A new report on the future direction of Scottish education by Ades states: "The financial challenges facing councils are such that Ades is witnessing variances.... in different parts of Scotland." The document, entitled The 2020 Vision, goes on to ask whether there is "too much variance and inconsistency to guarantee that each child in Scotland has an equally good chance of getting the best education possible regardless of where they live".

It also suggests Scotland lacks "true integration" of local and national improvement agencies and calls for a new National Performance Framework to raise standards.

Ades president John Fyffe said: "There is an unacceptable gap in the performance of young people from the most challenging social circumstances, with a consequential underachievement in their potential. We must look to the future and to what we need to change so that every young person in Scotland is able to achieve the best, otherwise we will fail them."
