GCSE to be axed in exam shake-up

THE GCSE exam in England is to be replaced by a new qualification called the English Baccalaureate Certificate in a move that widens the gulf between schools north and south of the Border.

Under the shake-up, unveiled by Westminster Education Secretary Michael Gove, a single three-hour exam will be introduced, replacing the current system which also uses course units as well as an external test.

In Scotland, new qualifications related to the Curriculum for Excellence – called Nationals – will rely heavily on units assessed throughout the year.
