SCHOOL pupils will be feeling a chill in the air if a council gets it way.

East Dunbartonshire is planning to cut temperatures in classrooms to save £7,500 a year on heating bills.

In a bid to find £23 million of savings over the next three years it has proposed making changes to contracts regarding the running of six high schools which were built as part of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme.

Currently, the buildings must be heated to 22C, with a two degree variation allowed before the school operator is deemed to have broken their deal.

However, under new plans, which councillors will vote on tomorrow, the standard temperature would be cut to 21C and a new agreement reached over the minimum temperature allowed.

Alan McKenzie, spokesman for the Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association, said he had concerns over the proposal. However the local authority said the policy would bring Bearsden Academy, Bishopbriggs Academy, Douglas Academy, St Ninian's High, Turnbull School and Kirkintilloch High into line with the other schools under the authority's control.
