FIFTH year pupil Jacqueline Quinn celebrated after getting five As in her higher exams.

The 17-year-old, a pupil at St Andrew's Secondary in Glasgow, cried tears of joy when she opened the envelope and discovered she had secured the top grades in English, maths, chemistry, biology and Spanish.

Jacqueline, of Sandyhills, Glasgow, hopes to study medicine at Cambridge University and needed a minimum of four As and a B to apply.

She said: "I only got my results at around 12pm and it was a nervous wait until that point. I burst into tears when I saw them, I was so happy.

"I got five As and that's what I wanted. I want to study medicine at university and you need a minimum of four As and a B so that extra A was an added bonus.

"My mum was here when they arrived and she was really, really happy and delighted for me. She just gave me a massive hug. I had to phone my dad because he was at work, but he was obviously really pleased too."

The teenager, who got eight ones in her standard grade exams last year, now has to wait until October before she can apply to university.

She said: "Cambridge is my first choice and if I got an offer there then obviously I would jump at it, but I'm also applying to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen."

Jacqueline said it was a huge relief to finally know her hard work and effort had paid off, adding: "I'll hopefully be going out to celebrate with my friends – although it will obviously depend on how they've done and whether they feel like celebrating or not."
