TEACHERS have toiled for years with mountains of pupils' work to mark.

But now they are to be helped by a new app that enables them to keep track of their workload.

The app has been developed by the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) union as part of its continuing campaign to reduce the burden on teachers.

The campaign was launched last year in response to growing concerns over excessive bureaucracy ushered in with the roll-out of the new school curriculum and exams.

The new app will allow EIS members to gather and calculate their working hours and workload demands over time.

Larry Flanagan, general secretary of the EIS, said: "Excessive workload is a problem for teachers at all stages and in all parts of Scotland. Our workload campaign has already delivered some progress in tackling teacher workload, including the establishment of a national working group to tackle bureaucracy.

"However, it is clear that much more needs to be done to cut excessive bureaucracy and to reduce teacher workload."
