A COUNCIL under fire for controversial proposals to redraw catchment areas has unveiled plans to look at education provision in another part of the city because of demand on a popular primary school.

Glasgow City Council's plans to ease overcrowding at Hillhead Primary in the west end, including changing boundaries, have caused controversy, with local parents claiming they could have a "devastating" impact on schools in the area.

While that consultation is still ongoing, yesterday the local authority announced another consultation, this time on changing the catchment areas for a cluster of primary schools in the south side.

It said Merylee Primary School and its associated secondary schools were oversubscribed and it is publishing another consultation which would affect it as well as Croftfoot, Battlefield, Mount Florida primary schools and King's Park, Hillpark and Shawlands secondary schools.

Councillor Stephen Curran, Executive Member for Education and Young People said: "For a variety of reasons, the number of families with young children in the current Merrylee catchment area has increased well beyond forecasts back in 2009.

"The school is very popular in the area.

"However, we now have to look at capacity and the knock on effects on the neighbouring primary schools and associated secondary schools."

The news came as plans to develop two new £15 million primary schools were given the green light.

The proposals for Broomhill and Gowanbank primary schools were approved at yesterday's council executive committee meeting.
