Pressure on schools as leavers forced to return

THOUSANDS of extra pupils are returning to secondary schools across Scotland because they cannot get a job or a place at college, teachers' leaders have warned.

As schools re-open this week after the summer holidays, teaching unions said members were reporting higher numbers of pupils returning to fifth and sixth year than anticipated.

In one school in Glasgow, some 160 pupils were expected to return after the summer holidays to take up courses, but almost 200 now want to come back.
