SCOTTISH ministers are to hold a summit with local authorities to look at ways of improving the standard of food served in schools in the wake of the horsemeat scandal, it was announced today.
Education Secretary Michael Russell said the scandal had thrown a "spotlight" on how school meals are sourced. Last week it emerged a frozen burger found in the kitchen of Cumbernauld High School, North Lanarkshire, contained horse DNA.
Local authorities will be invited to a meeting with Russell and Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead to discuss how to drive up standards.
Russell said: "We want to work with local authorities to be sure that best practice in procurement is routine."
