SCOTLAND'S oldest university has been ranked the country's best in a new league table.

St Andrews University, in Fife, came third overall in the UK-wide survey behind Oxford in second place and Cambridge, which came first.

The Guardian University Guide 2016 placed Heriot-Watt University, in Edinburgh, in 18th place in front of Edinburgh University, which came 20th.

Glasgow University came 24th followed by Strathclyde University in 33rd place and Dundee University in 38th.

A spokesman for St Andrews said: "The Guardian Guide is the third recent major league table in which the university has performed strongly."
