SCOTLAND'S largest teaching union has agreed to suspend a one-day strike over pension changes.

The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) said members would not walk out on March 28 as planned, pending talks with the Scottish Government and councils.

In December, the EIS urged the Scottish Government to take more responsibility for the outcome of pension negotiations.

It said Scottish mini- sters should make their position clearer while talks continue between the Westminster Government and unions.

Although the Scottish Government has no control over how much money will be spent on pensions, the EIS said it could help design a "Scottish solution" by shaping the way the Scottish Teachers' Superannuation Scheme (STSS) will operate in future.

Since December, the EIS has been lobbying ministers, MPs and MSPs to persuade the Scottish Government to enter into negotiation on the future design of the STSS.

The union said these discussions had "now borne fruit" and the Scottish Government and local authorities had agreed to negotiate.

As a result, the EIS executive committee decided to suspend industrial action.
