Universities in crisis? Call in the blue-sky thinkers...

Along with the River Tweed, the issue of university tuition fees is one of the great dividing lines between Scotland and England.

In England students pay £3,225 a year; step north of the Border and students pay nothing.

However, this once-clear dividing line looks set to become muddied.
