UNIVERSITY staff across Scotland took part in their second national strike in a bitter row over pay.

Unions said tens of thousands of people took part in the one-day walkout across the country, including at Edinburgh University, where staff and students picketed outside George Square Library.

Most universities attempted to keep the impact to a minimum, but the University of the West of Scotland, which has its headquarters in Paisley, closed.

Michael MacNeil, of the Universities and Colleges Union, said: "Staff are taking strike action to say enough is enough."

However, the Universities and Colleges Employers Association, which negotiates on behalf of universities as employers, said the strike had a minimal impact.
