Vanishing skill of handwriting

POOR handwriting in exams is a result of the proliferation of laptops and smartphones, says a leading academic.

Dr Beth Dickson, deputy head of Glasgow University's school of education, believes writing in longhand is a skill that is gradually disappearing.

Markers of this summer's Higher English exam again commented on the poor handwriting of some candidates. Ms Dickson said young people were growing up with very little experience of handwriting outside school.
