In pictures: the gannets of Bass rock

The Bass rock, in the Firth of Forth, is the biggest single-island gannet colony in the world.

The impressive sea birds return to the world famous volcanic rock, a few kilometres from North Berwick, at the beginning each year.

As these photos show, by early summer, the chicks have hatched and are growing fast, and the parents concentrate on catching fish ahead of the long Autumn journey to the west coast of Africa.
