PATIENTS at a Glasgow hospital were given bottled water today following a Legionella alert.

An independent contractor was drafted in today to sanitise the water system at Gartnavel General hospital after "higher than normal levels" of bacterial growth were discovered.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said there was no risk to patients or staff.

However, the board said one ward at the hospital requested bottled water as a precautionary measure.

A spokeswoman for NHSGGC said: "Following routine testing on the water at Gartnavel General Hospital we identified higher than normal levels of bacteria growths.

"Infection control advised that there was no risk to patients or staff.

"The system was sanitised by an independent contractor this morning.

"Whilst the water remained safe for washing and drinking, one ward requested bottled water as a precautionary measure and this was supplied."
