£60m for Scots medical research

RESEARCH into illnesses such as cancer and osteoarthritis as well as rare inherited disorders has been given a major boost after £60 million was awarded to teams at a Scottish university.

The windfall from the Medical Research Council (MRC) will help scientists working at Edinburgh University gain fresh insights into conditions such as schizophrenia, cystic fibrosis and genetic eye disorders including retinitis pigmentosa.

It is being given to the MRC Human Genetics Unit and the MRC Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM) at Edinburgh University, which will also help doctors develop and deliver new tests and therapies for patients.
