Arthritis research centre unveiled

SCOTLAND'S first research centre dedicated to developing new drugs and treatments to ease the pain of people suffering from arthritis has been unveiled.

The Arthritis Research UK Experimental Arthritis Treatment Centre at the University of Glasgow will test medication in a bid to improve treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, affecting half a million people in the UK.

It was set up with funding of £225,000 over three years from research charity Arthritis Research UK and the Scottish Government's Chief Scientist Office.Professor Iain McInnes said their research would hopefully lead to more tailored medication as well as avoiding handing out drugs that have a chance of causing side-effects.He said: "We want to use our expertise to answer some important questions: to discover how established medicines work and allow us to use them even more effectively; and to find out why people with arthritis are more disposed to developing heart attacks and strokes. Above all, we want to try and understand why arthritis happens in the first place."
