RESEARCHERS are warning there is very little evidence copper and magnetic bands help relieve the symptoms of arthritis.

A report, written by Dr Gareth Jones, a senior lecturer at Aberdeen University, found many complimentary therapies used by sufferers of musculoskeletal disorders have only been through one clinical trial and some have been through none at all.

The trawl of the available evidence, for charity Arthritis Research UK, identified acupuncture, massage, Tai chi and Yoga as among the most effective.

Dr Jones said: "The report aims to help people with musculoskeletal conditions and healthcare professionals by providing clear, scientific evidence about the safety and effectiveness of complementary therapies."

Professor Alan Silman, medical director of Arthritis Research UK, said: "Complementary therapies are largely chosen by the patient and quite often paid for by the patient, and the relationship between patient and practitioner seems to be crucial in the effectiveness of the treatment."
