Drug may stop skin cancer spreading

SKIN cancer patients with an advanced form of the disease could be treated more effectively with a new drug compared to traditional chemotherapy, research has found.

A German trial tested how patients suffering from BRAF mutation-positive melanoma responded to treatment with dabrafenib.

Dabrafenib works by blocking a key signaling protein responsible for the spread of malignant melanomas. It is estimated that about half of melanomas carry the mutated form of the BRAF gene that allows the drug to work.
