A HEALTH board is to withdraw drug dispensing services from a GP surgery on a Scottish island.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran notified Isle of Cumbrae's GP practice its dispensing contract will be withdrawn next April. It follows the opening of a pharmacy.

The new pharmacy means the board can no longer allow Dr Jim Bryson to continue dispensing from his practice. Dr Bryson says it cannot continue without the profits from the service.

Campaigner June Allison, of Save our Dispensing Service, said: "We have access to a GP 24 hours a day, but we're not sure if that will continue when our doctors go next year."

James Semple, a director of TLC Pharmacy Group, said extra checks by medical professionals will be beneficial to islanders.

The Scottish Government said an area should have a pharmacy if it can support one. An NHS Ayrshire & Arran spokesman said: "We will continue to fulfil our duties in respect of securing general medical services."
