Heart-defect survivors in fight for help

THEY were miracle babies whose lives were saved by ground-breaking surgery – but now the first generation of Scottish adults with complex heart defects is campaigning for better NHS treatment.

Medical advances mean thousands of babies with heart problems, who would once have died in infancy, are now becoming parents themselves – but they still have health problems.

A group of them has lodged a 700-name petition with the Scottish Parliament calling for better national standards for their care. Guidelines to drive up the quality of such services were rolled out in England six years ago.
