Hospital staff vaccinated as whooping cough spikes

MORE than 100 healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses, are being vaccinated against whooping cough in Scotland after a cluster of cases among hospital staff.

Parents with young babies who recently visited Forth Valley Royal Hospital Accident and Emergency department have also been offered antibiotics.

The unusual steps are being taken as a precaution after four frontline health staff at the hospital, in Larbert, Stirlingshire, fell ill with symptoms of the infection. Tests have now confirmed two of the staff have whooping cough and doctors suspect the other two are also suffering from the illness.
