New health service fears as job cuts set to rise far beyond 5,000

The cuts facing NHS staff in Scotland look set to go far deeper than the 5,000 originally projected, after one health board announced plans for a major reduction in employee numbers over the next two years.

NHS Lothian, which is in ­discussion with trade unions as it aims to save £180 million over the next three years, had been planning to shed 700 jobs in 2010/2011, but it emerged ­yesterday that a further 1,300 are to go the year after.
