A SCRIPT writer - who has been nominated for an Oscar - is speaking in Glasgow about the film inspired by his own experience suffering cancer as a teen.

Tom Bidwell, who also wrote Channel 4's Bafta-nominated My Mad Fat Diary, drew on his memories fighting Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 14 to pen the movie Wish 143.

He will be attending the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute on Saturday June 13 for a free screening of the hard-hitting but humorous film starring Sam Holland.

Mr Bidwell, 30, said: "It was a cathartic experience to write the film and I wanted to show how a teenager with cancer has the same wants and needs as any other teenager; they just happen to have cancer too. The film shows the person behind the illness to encourage others to think about this too."

Wish 143 was nominated for an Oscar in 2011 and is being shown as part of Glasgow Science Festival.
