Thousands of IVF women banned from giving blood

THOUSANDS of women who have received donated eggs during fertility treatment have been barred from giving blood amid fears they pose a higher risk of carrying the human form of mad cow disease.

The ban, intended to combat the spread of variant Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease (vCJD), applies to all women in the UK who have received donated eggs or embryos after 1980, whether or not they went on to become pregnant.
