Waverley Care Milestone, which provides residential support for people living with HIV or Hepatitis C, has marked its 25th birthday by reopening following a major refurbishment.

The Edinburgh centre was the UK's first purpose built Aids hospice when it opened in 1991.

Although better treatments mean very few people in Scotland go on to develop Aids following an HIV diagnosis, Milestone now offers residential outreach and support for those who have ongoing physical, emotional or mental health needs.

Grant Sugden, chief executive at Waverley Care, said: "The new facilities mean that we can offer more services including support into treatment for those living with Hepatitis C and more intensive services for those living with HIV.

"This support will help avoid people being admitted to hospital"
