134 cases referred to authorities

SOME 134 people – 91 females and 43 males – were referred to the Scottish National Referral Mechanism, which identifies trafficking victims, between April 2009 and December 2010.

Figures suggest that around 75 people are trafficked in Scotland each year, although this does not account for those who go unreported.

Almost all sex trafficking cases involve women, with a significant minority being under 18. Men make up the majority of trafficking victims forced into labour – 34 out of 50 reported cases.
