20 evacuated as fire hits tenement block

Twenty people have been evacuated from their homes due to a fire in a tenement block.

The blaze broke out in Crow Road, Glasgow, at around 2.20am today, spreading smoke throughout the building.

Firefighters rescued four residents from the upper floors of the block via ladders and five others were led to safety from within the building. In total 20 people were evacuated and given shelter at Partick Burgh Halls.

Six of those rescued were treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said.It took 35 firefighters to control the blaze which was reported by a resident trapped by smoke coming into their flat.Group Commander Richard Duncan said: "Due to the intensity of the fire and number of persons involved, the incident commander requested further resources from Springburn, Knightswood and Milngavie fire stations, with a total of 35 firefighters at the scene at the height of the blaze."During the incident, operations support centre (OSC) staff who received the initial calls provided 'fire survival guidance' to a resident who was trapped by the smoke in their flat above the fire."The OSC firefighter remained on the telephone line with the resident to provide reassurance and give instructions on how to prevent smoke from entering the property and how to keep themselves safe from the fire until the attending crews arrived and rescued the resident from the property."Firefighters remain at the scene in Crow Road and an investigation into the cause of the blaze will begin later.Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man and 35-year-old woman were rescued from a fire in a fourth-floor flat in Bingham Way, Edinburgh, at around 4am this morning.The pair were treated by paramedics and officers are investigating the cause of the blaze.
