About 200 jobs are under threat after a major building company announced it is to call in administrators.

Dundee-based Muirfield Contracts is a privately-owned construction business operating across Scotland.

Staff have received letters informing them that administrators will be appointed and they have been placed on indefinite gardening leave, the Courier reported.

The news comes after some workers were prevented access to Muirfield's headquarters at Camperdown industrial estate yesterday.

George Ramsay, Tayside and Fife regional organiser for trade union UCATT, told the newspaper: "Some workers received a letter saying administrators are about to be appointed and they are basically on gardening leave.

"We have to wait to see who the receivers are."

Muirfield has previously worked on major projects including Angus Council's headquarters in Forfar and the refurbishment of Dundee's McManus Galleries.

The company could not be contacted for comment.

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: "We are concerned to learn of developments at Muirfield Contracts and the impact this may have on employees, their families and on the surrounding area.

"We can confirm that we will provide assistance to any employees affected through our initiative for responding to redundancy situations, Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE).

"Through providing skills development and employability support, PACE aims to minimise the time people affected by redundancy are out of work."
