A post office worker took advantage of an 89-year-old pensioner to steal more than £33,000 from her savings account, a court has heard.

Marjorie Mills placed thousands of pounds of cash into the care of the Post Office after she was attacked in her Edinburgh home years ago.

But Nadeem Amjid, 26, took a total of £33,646 in a 19-month-long scam at the city's Colinton Mains Post Office, Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told. Mrs Mills's daughter discovered the money was missing on checking her mother's financial statements.

Amjid, of Edinburgh, had pled guilty to fraudulently obtaining cash on various occasions between October 29, 2010, and May 16, 2012.

Sentence was deferred pending reports.
