Malcolm Campbell, 25, from St Andrews in Fife, and Pete Rodger, 40, from Perthshire, were two of 29 miners who were killed in 2010 when a series of explosions ripped through the Pike River mine.
Previously, the authorities had deemed the mine inaccessible, forcing the men's families to accept they would never recover their loved ones.
But the Government has given the go ahead to a £3.6 million, six-month operation which will see teams try to access the mine and recover the bodies.
Mr Campbell's father, also called Malcolm, said: "It's a dilemma for the family because we said our farewells. But the experts don't want the boys to be left in there because it's a hellhole."
