700-year-old badge found

A 700-YEAR-OLD badge from the harness of the horse of one of Scotland's most famous knights has been discovered in the mud of a Kinross-shire field.

The red and gold pendant, thought to have belonged to Sir John Comyn, is so well preserved the metal detectorist who found it assumed it was a prefect's badge from the 1960s.

Later analysis showed it matched the Comyn coat of arms, which only the noble himself – a once-Guardian of Scotland – would have carried. John Eldridge, 67, said he found the rare medieval artefact during an organised metal detecting outing near Loch Leven Castle on February 3.
